Primark is a retail group in the value sector and operates a total of 199 stores in Ireland (where it trades under the Penneys brand), the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the UK. Primark employs in excess of 30,000 people.

In the financial year 08/09 (September 2008 to September 2009) Primark opened twelve new stores during the year: five in Spain, four in the UK and Primark’s first stores in each of the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal and Belgium. Primark now operates from over 6.1 million sq ft of selling space.

First established in 1969 as Penneys in Mary St (Dublin), Primark Stores Ltd., is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods (ABF)

Ethical Trading Initiative:
Primark is a member of the ethical trading initiative. This is an alliance of companies, trade unions and non profit organisations that aims to promote respect for the rights of people in factories and farms worldwide. As a member of ETI, Primark has committed to monitoring and progressively improving working conditions in the factories that supply Primark’s merchandise. Projects relating to the determination of a living wage, women’s rights and home-working are underway.

Awards:
In March 2010 founder and Chairman of Primark, Mr Arthur Ryan, was presented with a lifetime achievement award for Outstanding Contribution to Retail at the Retail Week Awards 2010 on 4th March this year. Primark also picked up the prestigious ‘Retailer of the Year’ award and ‘Store Design of the Year’ Award for the Primark Bristol store.
In November 2009, Primark was awarded ‘Retail Success Story of the Year’ in the MAPIC Retail Awards 2009. In September 2009, Primark received the ‘Casual Clothes’ Award in the Prima Fashion High Street Awards 2009. In July 2009, Primark (Penneys) received the ‘Best to Beat the Rip off’ Award in the U Magazine Highstreet Style Awards 2009. In May 2009, Primark was awarded ‘Best Budget Store on the High Street’ in the GMTV High Street Fashion Awards and was shortlisted in the ‘Retailer of the Year’ category in the World Retail Awards 2009. In 2008, Primark received twelve Awards. In December 2008, Primark received the ‘Retailer of the Year’ Award in the BCSC Gold Awards. In November 2008, Primark was awarded ‘Value Retailer of the Year’ in the Drapers Awards 2008. In September 2008, Primark was awarded ‘Best Shopping Centre Retailer 2008 (Spain)’ in the Spanish Association of Shopping Centre Awards. In September 2008, Primark received awards for ‘UK Retailer of the Year’, ‘Value for Money’ and ‘Casual Clothes’ in the Prima Fashion High Street Awards 2008.
